Our game changer for constipation

As I mentioned earlier, T has had always difficulties with bowel movements, but from summer 2020 it just got very bad. It got that bad that we had to use often, like every 3rd day, Microlax enema for few months, as nothing seemed to help. No "natural laxatives" helped at that moment in such way that no enema would be needed. In late autumn we started to use more or less regularly Pegorion (i.e. safe non-fiber over-the-counter constipation medicine in form of powder). It took literally weeks that it finally started have an effect. Till Xmas time or so, when we got back again, where we were in the autumn. For who knows the reason. Microlax had to be used every third day again. It happened despite of Pegorion use and good diet incl. vegetables, fruits, fiber (was checked also by our dietitian), moving outside, exercising etc. Well, you can always increase the amount of liquid, can you? We all know that it is not always that easy.

As it takes daily so much energy to think about "will it come or not, for how many days it did not come already, etc.. ". It is exhausting, believe me, and more or less already for some time we talk with T almost exclusively about pooping, daily. What a great topic for conversation with a little 6 years old kiddo!! Well, some people talk about "weather", some about pooping. At some point I started to think about what caused us that set back or actually what caused that all was fine before Xmas. Then I remembered that at some point I made for her puree of prunes, dates, figs, pear. Yeah! So, just recently i started to make the same puree again. But, as it is not very pretty looking (though it is tasty and T is not too picky) I decided to make of it candies by using agar powder. Now these candies are in regular use daily, 1-2, on top of Pegorion and we are pooping daily. And we celebrate every time it comes! Yessss!! Weird, isn't it?

I know there is too many people struggling with the same problem, and out there there are too many different "for sure working" home-made recipes for constipation, but still I would like to share this our one with you. It is worth of try, if nothing else. For us it has been a game changer.

Recipe:

75g of dried prunes

75g of dried dates

75g of dried figs

1 pear

4 cups of water

optional coconut oil 1 tablespoon

Cook all together till all ingredients are soft, make puree of it. That easy! Sweet by itself. All natural. Whatever can be added in, whatever your little one likes/prefers. This can be eaten just like that, or even with pancakes, as bread spread. For us, the easiest are now candies.

Candies:

2 dl of puree

1 teaspoon of agar powder

Heat puree until it boils, add 1 teaspoon of agar, stir for few seconds and pure into "candy molds" e.g. from silicone. Wait for like 30 min, or until it hardens.

Here are our molds, some of them. Fishes and the "hearts" are favorites.

And here is the ready candy:

Lovely! Isn't it? Delicious, non-messy, sugar-free, home made, etc...working, helping, what to wish more?

As it really made me to think what caused our set back around Xmas and as I tend to forget things very easily for some time already, I made "bowel movement tracker" spreadsheet for us. Feel free to download it and use it, at least for me it is very helpful to mark down what I gave to T, how much and WHEN. Any changes can be more easily then tracked down.
