Sourdough and constipation?
Constipation seems to be
closely related to hypotonia, i.e. low muscle tone. Many of you, with hypotonia
kids, know, what I talk about. We are not an exception and we have been
struggling with constipation from birth, basically, till now. We are almost 4
yrs old now. We had really hard days every now and then, stools were so
superhard that I had to physically pull the stool out of that little girl. That
screaming was just unbearable. We tried basic remedies like prunes (we usually
drunk “prune juice”, i.e few prunes are put into a cup with water overnight),
flax seeds, probiotics are still eaten on a daily basis, we tried also
lactulose, in the worst case we used glycerine suppository. Actually, there
were not too many choices, as we hardly ate and drunk something at the
“baby” age (about that later on). And later on it did not really get better, even though
we ate better, drunk more, were more active. So, nothing really helped in a long
run, all was just “for a supershort while”. Just simply all the time tiny and
hard “droppings” coming out, once in few days…
About 2 months ago I got more
excited about sourdough and baking from it. My father has been eating sourdough
bread already for some time, and claims all the time, at least still, that in
general he feels better, esp. his digestion improved. So, I made our own
sourdough starter from scratch, and we eat something made of sourdough daily
these days. We make bread, rolls, pizza, pasta, pancakes, waffles, and trying
more and more recipes. Last week I made cinnamon rolls. Just accidentally, as I
planned to do something totally else from that dough. It just looked so much of
it that I tried to make cinnamon rolls. They were delicious. And as with all we
make from sourdough, it takes “ages” to make, but is gone in few seconds. We
became fans of sourdough, and the most important is, it seems that it helps. I
cannot say we feel better, as my little one does not talk yet, so she cannot
say how she feels. But, although we still produce “droppings”, pooing is much
more regular, comes daily, sometimes even twice or three times a day. I am not
aware of any other “diet change”, as we eat more or less all the time the same
meals. So, I wonder, if “sourdough diet” really helps us? Does anybody of you
have similar experience?
